Don’t Let the Sun Catch You Crying

***

My favorite of the British Invasion groups, aside from The Beatles, The Stones and the Dave Clark Five, was Gerry and the Pacemakers. Though only active for a few years in the first half of the 60s, they had a sound that touched some deeper chords than their contemporaries.  In my opinion, at least one of lead singer Gerry Marsden’s ballads, Don’t Let the Sun Catch You Crying, was  as good as anything that Lennon and McCartney wrote in that same time frame…and it didn’t hurt that George Martin was the producer on the track.

  1. I loved Gerry and the Pacemakers. My favorite is Ferry Cross the Mersey, but Don’t Let the Sun Catch You Crying is a close second. Thanks for sharing it.

    • Yes, I love that song, too. The funny thing for me was visiting Manchester a few decades ago—my mother was born and grew up there—and seeing the Mersey. It was literally so narrow there that one could walk across it. No one was going to be doing any ferrying there, that’s for sure. It took some of the romanticism out of the song for me, but it’s still a great song.

      • How interesting to know. Now I’ll have to Google it and see it for myself. LOL. Thanks again for sharing the song.

  2. Dear Jack,

You are absolutely correct . That is a wonderful song…. both the lyric and the melody! I can still hear it in my head!

As always your biggest fan, Miss Donna
