Flying High

Buster Keaton in the amazing cyclone scene from Steamboat Bill Jr.

The bit at 3:10 almost killed him. He had a leeway of just inches. And he was doing the “lean” way before Michael Jackson.

  1. Keaton *is* the special effects. After a childhood in vaudeville where his father threw him across the stage as part of the act, he was a physical daredevil. All those stunts are real. For the house drop, he stood on his mark with the house frame on the ground around him; then they winched up the frame as he stood still. They turned the cameras on and let the house frame fall back down again…had he moved at all, it would have been curtains.
