Made me look up George Tilyou. Very interesting history. I was a small child, but Steeplechase remains an exciting word for me. My grandmother used to say I had a big mouth like steeplechase. I rode the horse one time on my Dad’s lap.
LOL. The same here for the Bronx. Except for the few times our elementary school would take us to the Zoo, I don’t think i set foot in the Bronx until I was in my twenties.

I remember the Wild Mouse. Absolutely terrifying ride.
I’m from the Bronx. Coney Island meant a long train ride. The Wild Mouse was a distant mythological image.

The zoo is the best thing, true. In Bronxese the word for distant was “out in Canarsie”.
