Long time anti-nuclear activist Dr. Helen Caldicott talks with me in this radio interview, broadcast yesterday on WBAI’s Arts Express program, about the continuing danger and threat of nuclear war; the relationship of the nuclear power industry to the nuclear weapons industry; and what ordinary people can do to stop the nuclear madness.

Caldicott, named by the Smithsonian Institute as one of the most influential women of the 20th century,  has just edited a new book, Sleepwalking to Armageddon, a short but sobering compilation of essays that outlines where the world stands now in relation to the nuclear danger, and what must be done.

  1. Great interview with Helen, Jack!! *It was very important*. Helen had not done much that I knew of after she wrote *The New Nuclear Danger* back in 2002–which was packed with information everyone should know. Then there was a documentary made on her life wherein she was covered in a way that made me think she was giving up on her quest to end nuclear power and the nuclear industries and that her life and quest were fundamentally “over.” It was kind of depressing, I thought.

I am so glad that she has regained her hope enough to pull together another book. The things she warned about in T*he New Nuclear Danger- *the escalation of nuclear weapons development and build-up being funded and planned by the Pentagon, like THAD, and more–were not stopped and are up and running. I think that the US capitalist class just “deployed” THAD in South Korea!! Her message had been buried, it seems.

That is why your interview with her is so important!! I am so glad you did that. I had not seen notices about this new book anywhere!

I don’t know of anyone else who is really publicizing this message like Helen Caldicott does.

    Great work!!!

    Thanks!!!

  2. Thanks, Marilyn. She does important work, but I wish I had more time to push her a bit more on her faith in our “democracy.” Look at the insane tax bill that’s about to be passed, clearly against the wishes of the majority of the population. Maybe things are a little bit more open in Australia.
