Ashokan, Farewell

***

Jay Ungar, Molly Mason, Mike Meranda, Ruth Unger, and a host of others bid farewell to the 2018 Summer Hoot in Ashokan with Jay’s haunting ballad, “Ashokan Farewell.” The song gained fame by being featured as the theme song of Ken Burns’s Civil War series.

  1. Wow, this brought tears to my eyes. The song was overplayed for a while, but I love it, and I really love the informality of this video. I don’t have close ties to the music, other than it makes me cry. 🙂 So I guess I do.
Wild places in upstate NY deeply nourished my soul, for decades. The resulting primal appreciation for the outdoors is what brought me to the Pacific northwest, where I happily live now, on Fidalgo Island. The eastern North American landscape is my roots though, and that’s where this music emanates from.
Here’s a link to a post I did a few years ago about the reservoir, and the song. Enjoy!
