I still remember seeing Pete sing at the Stern Grove Festival in San Francisco, 1969-ish. And though I was just a pre-schooler, my folks let me light out on my own and walk around the festival, taking it all in. Then, later, as we drove home, we passed a long row of houses up on the hills of Daly City, and my mom said, “Those are the ‘little boxes’ Pete was singing about.” And why am I telling this story, Jack? I don’t know, but I guess the video sort of sparked the memory.
Pete has had an effect on so many. Probably fair to say that he was the most influential influence on the spread of American folk music. And without Pete, there’s probably no Dylan, and without Dylan…
