How much do you think was improvised? I believe they fobeyed one of the five cardinal rules of improv: don’t deny. Whatever your scene partner throws to you, you go with it and don’t deny.
I used to have a paperback that they wrote of the scripts of their best routines. They’ve performed some of these routines over many many years, and they don’t seem to change them too much. I’d say 90% script and maybe 10% improv. But I don’t doubt that a lot of the scripts first came into being by improvising on a premise and then keeping what they liked. And the “don’t deny” rule definitely seems to be part of the way they work.
