Linda Ronstadt’s distinctive and bold pop voice cut through a lot of the other sounds of the era. “Different Drum” was the perfect example of the right song for the right singer. Written by Mike Nesmith for The Monkees, the song didn’t click until Linda Ronstadt sung it and changed the gender in the lyrics. It became her first big hit.
