Monday morning, a haunting song by Jackson C. Frank, a folk singer who was not well known, but was influential. Simon & Garfunkel recorded this song for their Sounds of Silence album, but it didn’t make it into the original release. Years later, it was added as a bonus track to the Sounds of Silence CD. If Jackson Frank’s arrangement sounds very early Paul Simon-ish here, it’s because Paul Simon was the producer of Frank’s only album.
What the late John Prine figgered he’d do when he got to heaven. And he probably is.

This is one of the first ever songs I remember hearing on the radio. I must have been about five years old. It’s sung by the..uh…less-than-dynamic?…Sheb Wooley.

Paul Simon and wife Edie Brickell with an affectionate cover of the 1957 Bobbettes song, evidently from their house during Covid lockdown days. It was written about a math teacher that the members of the Bobbettes had. The Bobbettes, incidently, were the first girl group to have a top 10 American hit at the same time as a #1 R&B hit.

One of my favorite Dylan cuts, specifically because Dylan’s singing is really expressive on this. I really believe he is “ol’ Tom Moore from the bummer shore.”
Here’s a link to an excellent UK blog post that talks more about the song, and its different versions, and you’ll see how immense Dylan’s contribution to this old-time ballad was:
Monday morning, Keith Carradine in the film Nashville apparently singing to three women each of whom think he’s singing specifically only to her, until they finally realize he’s singing to Lily Tomlin, whose silent reaction is something to behold.
The story told by author Michael Schulman is that Carradine originally wrote the song for actress Shelly Plimpton. Carradine, a newcomer to New York City, saw Plimpton in the Broadway play Hair when he was nineteen, and then showed up at Plimpton’s apartment door, playing the song for her. And they became a couple for a while…
