Monday morning, the great Smokey Robinson song as performed by Allison Young. We always enjoy her duets with Josh Turner, but even some of her much earlier YouTube videos, made in her bedroom, as seen here, show her extraordinary voice and artistry.

Monday morning, banjo legend Earl Scruggs pays a visit to Joan Baez’s house in the California hills. It’s 1972, and the courageous Earl Scruggs was the first (and one of the very few) major country western star to have come out against the Vietnam war.
Earl decided he wanted to expand his musical horizons, so he paid a visit to a slew of young singers, including Dylan and Baez. Documentarian David Hoffman got it all on film and turned the footage into an award winning documentary.
Here’s a scene at Baez’s home with Baez singing “Love is Just A Four-Letter Word” and Scruggs playing backup. Baez’s singing voice here is incredible, unearthly almost, just sitting there in her living room with no equipment. Earl’s talented 16 year old son Randy is on the other side of Joan, playing guitar.

Monday morning, “Maria,” played on the guitar by Per-Olov Kindgren as perfect as perfect can be. Even Bernstein would have to agree.

Last month I saw an excellent folk singer at the Summer Hoot in Ashokan, NY named David Bernz, singing there with his son, Jacob. It turns out that David was a good friend of Pete Seeger, and when he would drop by Pete’s house in Beacon NY, David would bring a tape recorder along at Pete’s request. Pete would proceed to tell stories that he thought would be worthwhile for eventual wider distribution.
This year, David has come out with a book of transcripts of Pete’s recordings called Chopping Wood, Thoughts and Stories of a Legendary American Folksinger. It’s filled with lots of great Pete Seeger stories and background information by David. With David’s permission, I read one of those stories on the air about the famous racist Peekskill riot in 1949 against Paul Robeson who was kicking off a series of benefit concerts for racial equality.

So, I thought Steve Poltz was just a hilarious goodtime folkie. Little did I suspect that he’s also a songwriting genius. His song “Trash” is one of the most haunting songs I’ve heard in many a day.

The Shadows, though not very big in the US, were successful in the UK during the early 1960s, pretty much at the same time as the Beatles. But even in the US, this instrumental was a song that every garage band of the time couldn’t wait to learn in order to play it at their high school get-togethers.
